Cultural depth and artistically rich environment are all Omowayeola has known, and just like her, Shaykara was born in West Africa. Precisely, Shaykara was born in the Lome Grand Market in Togo.
Shaykara represents an intersection of West African heritage and modern sustainable practices. The brand builds narratives through deadstock fabrics and natural materials like raffia and coconut shells. Omowayeola challenges us to reconsider the definition of “waste.” She blends storytelling and craftsmanship while utilising fabrics and colour to encourage more intentional fashion choices.

“Sísí Èkó” captures the paradox of Lagosian life. It explores the grit of the daily hustle along with the desire to look effortlessly while navigating the city. Drawing from real stories of resilience and feminine strength, designer Omowayeola weaves traditional Yoruba symbols and Odu Ifa motifs into contemporary silhouettes.
The Oyin set: the sweetness of purple heritage
This set is handwoven 100% cotton Aso-Oke; it demonstrates Shaykara’s abilities to manipulate traditional textiles into alluring silhouettes. The set explores the concept of “sweetness” and “richness,” taking its name from the Yoruba word for honey. While the name suggests warmth, the visual execution is a stunning study in royal purple and magenta tones, which is 100% handwoven cotton Aso-Oke.
This two-piece ensemble consists of a halter-neck corset top and a matching mini skirt, both embellished with hand-beading. The purple palette of the Oyin set reflects a regal interpretation of Lagos style.
The fabric’s textured weave adds a depth that reinterprets tradition with a youthful, playful style. My favourite part is the styling, the floral-accented heels and hair piece emphasise the theme of blooming femininity of the young Lagos woman.
